Grip sock size guide: how to choose the right size

Our grip socks come in two sizes: S (shoe size 35-39) and M (shoe size 40-44). We keep it simple on purpose. A grip sock should fit snugly, because a sock that shifts loses its grip. Below you will find the full size chart, how to measure and honest fit advice if you are unsure.

Do you wear a half size, for example 39.5? Round to the nearest whole size and follow the chart. If in doubt, our advice below always applies: choose the smaller size.

How to measure your foot length

1. Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor, against the wall.
2. Stand up straight on the paper with your heel against the wall.
3. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
4. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimetres.

Two tips for an accurate measurement. Measure at the end of the day, because feet swell slightly over the course of the day. And measure both feet, because almost nobody has two feet of the same length. Use the longer of the two.

How should a grip sock fit?

Snug, like a second skin. The sock follows the shape of your foot, with no folds under the arch and no excess fabric at the toes. You feel light compression around the instep, but no pinching pressure. Only then does the grip pattern do its job: the dots move with your sole instead of shifting underneath it.

That is why a grip sock feels tighter than a regular sock fresh out of the packaging. That is the idea. After a few wears the elastane gives just enough to stay comfortable.

Between two sizes? Choose the smaller one

If you are on the border between S and M, choose the smaller size. A slightly tighter sock stretches with you and keeps its grip. A sock that is too loose will fold, and every fold is a place where your foot can slip. With grip socks, too big is the only real mistake.

Do grip socks shrink in the wash?

Not if you wash them properly: inside out at 30 degrees and not in the tumble dryer. Heat shrinks cotton and damages the silicone dots, so skipping the dryer is the most important rule. Read the full washing routine in our guide on washing grip socks.

Frequently asked questions about grip sock sizes

Which grip sock size should I choose with shoe size 39?

Size S. Our S is designed up to and including shoe size 39 and has plenty of stretch. If you prefer a slightly looser fit or have a wide foot or high instep, M will fit too, but for maximum grip we recommend S.

I wear shoe size 45. Will size M fit me?

Size M is designed up to and including shoe size 44. The elastane stretches with you, so it usually still fits a size 45, although it will be really snug. Above size 45 we do not recommend it.

Do PLTÉ grip socks run large or small?

They are true to size, with a deliberately snug fit. So order your usual size according to the chart and do not go a size up, because then you lose grip.

Are there grip socks for men?

Yes, our grip socks are unisex. Size M (40-44) fits most men. Colours like Chocolate Brown, Cream White and Warm Beige are the ones men choose most.

Which size should I choose for a gift?

Not sure of the shoe size? Choose S for women and M for men. That is right in the vast majority of cases. And if not, we will sort it out: you can return or exchange within 30 days.
